Why are strait edge people shoved so far up their own ass? It drives me mad! I'm having a debate with one of my friends on Facebook about it. Usually I wouldn't give two shits about anything facebook related, as I check it maybe once a day for about less than a minute. Anyway, I was scrolling down and saw, "If you don't respect yourself first then how do you expect others to show you respect. willingly drinking and smoking is harmful to the body and is in taking toxins that don't belong. That's not respecting yourself. I show you no respect. understanding what straight edge is is a step in the right direction."

I grew up with this kid and we're really good friends and he knows I drink, so this is kind of like a personal sting, ya know? So I reply with, "However, showing people who choose to drink no respect is rather close minded. I can't seem to wrap my head around why people who choose to live different lifestyles can't respect each other as long as what they're doing is legal. But maybe you can enlighten me?"

Naturally his response made no sense: "because when somethings legal it doesnt make it right. when open mindedness results in close mindedness is when people like me come about. i hate everyone equally. "

Then I say, "I don't think that makes much sense there. Just because one person drinks and another person is strait edge doesn't mean they can't respect each other. They simply choose to walk different paths. Neither path is more right than the other. For instance, someone like me who has an occasional drink can say that strait edge people don't respect their bodies by getting tattoos which literally poisons your skin by the dirt, rust, and other minerals that make up the ink to stain your the largest organ of a persons body with the toxins in tattoo ink. Also, a person has much higher chances of contracting HIV and other blood related diseases through tattoos than they do from having a drink at a bar. So in theory, how can one be strait edge if they have tattoos? This is why I don't understand the whole issue. So what if a person drinks? So what if a person gets tattoos? There's no real difference as long as the two people get along and can show respect for each other."

TL;DR version:
Him: "People who drink and smoke suck"
Me: "Shut up"
Him: "No"
Me: "You suck"

Anyway, am I over reacting over this? I mean, afterall, I grew up with this kid my whole life and thought we were really good friends, but then he just posts that he doesn't respect anyone who isn't hardcore strait edge. And idk about the rest of you, but respect is something I hold a high value to.

He sounds like an impressionable douchebag caught up in some stupid trend. Ignore him completely and maybe he'll realize what a tool he's being. If not, he'll probably move to Utah where he can be with like-minded idiots.

straight edge kids (and he is a kid right?) are almost always looking for an argument, like militant vegans. he'll be over it in a year or two and you can have your friend back.

I used to be straight edge, and then I felt a change of heart. I can see both sides of the story, but sounds to me like he's just being a douche. Real straight edge people don't even talk about it with other people, and don't flaunt it. I still know people like this, and I have a lot of respect for them. They treat me the same as they did while I was edge. They are in it for themselves and no one else. That's the way it should be.

Tell your straight edge friend to chill the fuck out. If he is straight edge, he should listen to hardcore, and if he listens to hardcore, he should listen to Mental. If he listens to Mental and still acts that way, he's a douche.
